Pelvic Floor Therapy

What is the pelvic floor?
The pelvic floor is a group of muscles that support the bladder, bowel, and reproductive organs. These muscles play an important role in bladder and bowel control, sexual function, and core stability.

What is pelvic floor Physical Therapy?
Pelvic floor physical therapy is a specialized form of physical therapy focused on assessing and treating dysfunction of the pelvic floor muscles. A trained pelvic health physical therapist uses a combination of education, exercise, manual therapy, and lifestyle strategies to help restore healthy function.

Conditions treated with pelvic floor physical therapy may include:

  • Urinary incontinence (leakage with coughing, sneezing, exercise, or urgency)
  • Pelvic organ prolapse
  • Constipation or bowel dysfunction
  • Pelvic pain (including pain with sitting, intercourse, or exercise)
  • Pregnancy-related discomfort and postpartum recovery
  • Diastasis recti (abdominal muscle separation)
  • Hip, low back, or tailbone pain related to pelvic floor dysfunction

What to expect in therapy:

  • Comprehensive evaluation: Your therapist will review your medical history, discuss your symptoms, and may perform a gentle exam of the pelvic muscles (with your consent).
  • Personalized treatment plan: This may include relaxation techniques, strengthening or coordination exercises, manual therapy, posture and breathing training, and guidance on daily habits.
  • Education and empowerment: You’ll learn strategies you can use at home to support long-term pelvic health.

Who can benefit?
Pelvic floor therapy can help people of all ages and genders. Whether you are recovering after childbirth, experiencing pelvic pain, or dealing with bladder/bowel changes, specialized therapy can often make a significant difference.
